Happy Holidays from Ticino Film Commission

Best wishes for a happy festive season and a sincere thank you to those who helped us tell the story of the magic of our region again during yet another year at 24 frames per second.

In December, film sets often go into hibernation. Not always, at least not screenwriting or even post-production. For us at the Ticino Film Commission, who follow the audiovisual Ticino in its entirety, from conception to premiere, it is a less hectic month during which we can look back on the past 12 months and think about those to come.

We were not bored, the year was characterised by the vote on 'LexNetflix', which will bring new producers from 2024 onwards to produce in our region, but also by large streaming platforms that here, in our area, had the camera rolling. We are aware that we caused quite a few headaches, along with the production companies involved and all the service and logistics partners, when we blocked off the city of Lugano for four days, when we invaded the Bavona Valley for a film set in the 19th century, when we stood on top of the St. Gotthard Pass and closed it for a few hours, when we helped organise (fake) protest rallies in the old town of Locarno. From Chiasso, via Mendrisio, which in its first year of the Mendrisio Film Fund has seen a multiplication of film investments in its region, to Airolo - which also activated a new fund: the Airolo Film FundTo date, we have actively supported 37 productions, 18 of which have received financial support amounting to CHF 110'000. Productions that have generated direct expenditure in the region estimated at almost CHF 4 million. Seven productions benefited from the new Mendrisio and Airolo regional funds and 14 from the Fund for the Promotion of the Italian Language in Swiss Cinema, of which 9 productions received financial support for the development phase and 5 for subtitles translation.

We went further: on the Nufenen Pass we stopped to meet the Valais Film Commission, a newborn film commission - welcomed at the last Locarno Film Festival - to which we extend our best wishes; beyond Gotthard, we presented Ticino cinema in the splendid showcase of Zurich's Cinema Xenix for a very special programme during the month of September. And again in an evening dedicated to young Ticino filmmakers at the Kurzfilmtage in Winterthur. We once again hosted the Cinémathèque suisse to continue the work of preserving past Ticino productions and visited the sacred places of the canton, looking at them through the eyes of cinema. Finally, together with SSASuissimage and RSI, we’ve even thought about the films of the future, inaugurating the Fund for the promotion of the Italian language in Swiss cinema, convinced that exciting new scripts to be filmed in our region will be written.

If we're taking a few days off now, it's because we know that 2023 will start with a bang: Ticino films in Solothurn and the set of the first national TV series to be filmed entirely in Ticino, all within the first few weeks of the year. We won't be bored and we hope you will be with us for the next round: " lights, camera, action!".

See you soon and wishing you all Happy Holidays.
