Since 1890, the only cogwheel railway in Ticino and one of the oldest still in operation in Switzerland has been departing from Capolago on Lake Lugano and travels 9 km through the evocative nature of the Monte Generoso park. At an altitude of 1704 metres in 2017, the majestic Fiore di pietra, designed by the famous architect Mario Botta, towers over a rocky plateau suspended between Switzerland and Italy. It houses a gourmet restaurant bathed in light, a self-service restaurant with an adjoining panoramic terrace, a fully equipped conference room and a terrace with a breathtaking 360° panorama of the Alps, lakes, valleys and plains.
Monte Generoso is the ideal destination for lovers of nature and outdoor activities thanks to its 51 km of paths, the via ferrata and excursions to discover the Nevère, ancient buildings and extraordinary example of the social organisation of the inhabitants of the alpine pastures in the past.
Architecture enthusiasts are also drawn from all over the world to discover Botta's work and to be surprised by the beauty of the panorama and the quality of the food and wine on offer, which is closely linked to traditions and the territory.
The location is at the top of Monte Generoso and can be reached by the cogwheel train of the Ferrovia Monte Genreoso that leaves from the Capolago-Riva San Vitale - Ticino station.
