Following the success of workshops led by filmmakers Béla Tarr, Michelangelo Frammartino and Radu Jude, the Locarno Film Festival is renewing its commitment to emerging talent with a ten-day workshop led by French filmmaker Alice Diop. The workshop, entitled “Pas de deux”, will run from 16 to 24 March 2024 as part of the program L'immagine e la parola. Young filmmakers from all over the world to come and work in the canton of Ticino with professional actors and actresses and under the close guidance of Alice Diop, a major artist whose work blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction, bringing together elements of both genres in the creation of her internationally acclaimed films.

In anticipation of this workshop, the Locarno Film Festival and CISA, in collaboration with the Ticino Film Commission, are pleased to launch a call for applications from professional actors who are interested in participating in the workshop. The selected performers will collaborate with Alice Diop and the filmmakers picked for the workshop on short films to be produced in the upcoming edition of the Locarno Spring Academy.

Once the call for applications has closed, around 15 actors will be invited to Locarno on 18 March to attend an audition with Alice Diop (travel and accommodation costs for this session will be covered by the participants). Six candidates will be selected from this audition and will then take part in the projects of the filmmakers selected for the workshop. These are scheduled to be shot between 20 to 22 March, with 19 March reserved for rehearsals.

An attendance allowance of up to CHF 2,500 will be paid to each selected actor, subject to readjustment in case shooting covers fewer than the allotted number of days. Meals and accommodation will be paid for by the Locarno Film Festival.

The main language of the workshop will be French. A good knowledge of Italian, German and English is also appreciated.

Application:

Send your application by the online form. You will be required to attach the following documents (deadline: 28.02.2024):

-  A copy of their identity document;

-  Two headshots (one portrait and one full-length photo);

-  A curriculum vitae;

-  A video portfolio of previous work;

-  A one-minute video presentation in French.

The short films produced as part of this workshop will be screened twice for the public at the 77th Locarno Film Festival, to be held from 7 to 17 August 2024.

The Spring Academy is organised by the Locarno Film Festival and CISA (International Academy of Audiovisual Sciences), in collaboration with the Ticino Film Commission and with the support of RSI, the Hotel du Lac and the Hotel Belvedere.
