The Forts in Camorino

They were built in the 1850s, during a period of great political and economic crisis in Ticino. Indeed, after a series of diplomatic skirmishes between Ticino and Austria following the revolutionary uprisings of 1848, thousands of Ticino citizens were expelled from Lombardy-Venetia and remained unemployed...

In order to provide work for the returning Ticino refugees, the Confederation commissioned the construction of fortifications south of Bellinzona, the Fortini della fame, to contain any eventual Austrian attack from the south. It was a strategic project dating back to 1844, but also a sort of employment program ante litteram.

Going uphill and plunging deeper into the forests, we find the 5 recently restored towers:
