Located at 2130 metres above sea level in the municipality of Airolo, the St. Gotthard wind farm is the first in the Canton of Ticino and is an integral part of the AET (Azienda Elettrica Ticinese) production chain in the Leventina.
The U-shaped valley, chosen for the insertion of the five wind turbines, stretches from north to south, including mountain lakes, military installations, road and tourist infrastructures, the Lucendro and Sella hydroelectric plants, as well as various infrastructures for the transport of energy and the St Gotthard hospice.
The layout of the five towers was therefore the result of the combination of technical requirements, such as the exploitation of the wind and the geomorphological conditions of the terrain, the presence of the existing infrastructures, the use of public places (such as the museum and the hotel), and the respect of wildlife requirements.
