The San Vitale Church is located in an urban setting, between the railway, the UBS bank building and the Chiasso town hall. It has a beautiful and spacious square in front of the entrance.
The first mention of the building goes back to 1237, but the current structure dates from to the 20th century, when the previous Baroque structure was demolished. In 1928, in fact, the church had become the seat of an archpriesthood, and six years later it was decided to completely rebuild it and make it more monumental. The project, signed by Aristide Conti, envisaged an eclectic basilica with the interior divided by pillars into three naves, broken by a transept and ending in the semi-circular apse. The church, completed in 1935, thus became one of the last examples of eclectic art in Switzerland.
Inside there are frescoes, stained glass windows and a carved portal.
