The foundation of the convent and the adjoining church dates back to 1450. Augustinian nuns lived there and carried out their mission until 1857. In the mid-19th century, the convent was closed and abandoned to decay. In the 1980s, the convent was reborn as part of a total renovation of the village centre, carried out under the guidance of the prominent Ticino architect Luigi Snozzi.
Snozzi's project aimed at an enhancement of the historic centre instead of decentralisation, as originally planned. The former convent has been transformed into a modern municipal centre housing various public and religious bodies, a benchmark model of public space planning.
