Church of St John the Baptist

Mendrisio

Church of St John the Baptist

The church in neo-Baroque style was built on the initiative of the Servite order between 1722 and 1729, designed by Giovan Pietro Magni of Castel San Pietro (nave) and Giuseppe Antonio Soratini (presbytery, choir and sacristy).

Inside, the single nave is sumptuously decorated with stuccos dating from 1724-27. In the vault of the nave and the apse, Giovan Battista Bagutti frescoed four medallions in 1774. The very old organ in the presbytery, which once belonged to the old 16th-century church, deserves special attention, while in a niche in the chancel is the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, which is carried through the streets of the town in the historic Good Friday procession.

Next, the old gymnasium and boarding school, formerly the Servite Fathers' Convent, is now the Mendrisio Art Museum. On the other side, the Oratory.
