Inaugurated in 2012, the Museum of fossils of Monte San Giorgio is housed in a building designed by Mario Botta. It exhibits fossils of animals and plants found in the deposits of Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through a four-storey exhibition featuring original finds, illustrations, models, 3D animations, and augmented and virtual reality experiences, the museum allows visitors to discover the world of the Middle Triassic period, around 240 million years ago, when fish and saurians inhabited the shores of a subtropical sea. The museum showcases world-renowned palaeontological heritage that has been studied by specialists since 1850.
