700 metres above sea level, on Monte Stella, which dominates with its fearsome overhangs the northern part of the town of Mendrisio above the cellars, stands the small church commonly known as the church of San Nicolao, but dedicated to the Virgin Mary (under the title "Liberatrice") and St Nicholas of Bari.
The small church was built in 1413, extended and modified in the 17th century. Subsequent restorations
brought the building to its current state.
The enchanting place, suffused with silence and peace, soon attracted the friars of the Third Order of Francis (the hermits) who built a hermitage next to the small church that lasted until the end of the 19th century.
The hermitage of San Nicolao and its surroundings are canton-protected property.
Part of the hermitage and its terrace are currently used as a grotto.
