Situated on a promontory to the north of the small village of Ligornetto, the museum was the residence of the sculptor Vincenzo Vela (1820-1891). During the 20th century, the building was remodelled several times; the latest renovation, by the architect Mario Botta, transformed the artist's 19th century house-museum into a modern museum, spatially recovering the plan determined by the centrality of the octagonal hall.
The museum is surrounded by a large green area.
To the north the visitor is greeted by a small metal bridge over a pond and to the south by a double flight of steps that runs between a floral area at the centre of which is a small fountain in rocailles.
