In a predominantly mountainous area like Canton Ticino, the Piano di Magadino, which extends between Bellinzona and Lake Maggiore, has exceptional characteristics. Large open spaces, vast agricultural expanses and now-reclaimed marshland meet industrial spaces and buildings of various types. The coexistence of railway infrastructure with farms, large shopping centres and natural floodplains creates a strange landscape. Rural glimpses juxtaposed with environments of partial local degradation. Different environments can be found at very close distance: level crossings, farms, cultivated fields, a small airport, pastures, livestock, chimneys, sheds, high voltage pylons, overpasses, rivers and streams.
