Congiunta

Designed by architect Peter Märkli as a small museum for the sculptures of his artist friend Hans Josephsohn, 'La Congiunta' was built in Giornico in 1992, between the Ticino river and the railway, in a grassy clearing in the heart of the Leventina Valley. Adapting to Josephsohn's sculptural programme, divided into three phases, the building is in turn divided into three spaces, with different characteristics in terms of proportions and light management. In the words of its designer, 'La Congiunta' is "a work that reflects on the ways in which sculpture and architecture could define each other, without neglecting the gap that has separated the two spheres since the Renaissance".
