Produced by the famous Zurich-based company Condor-Film, Fusio, eine Geschichte aus dem Bergdorf is a short film that portrays the village of Fusio through a fiction interpreted by local people. The story is told by the voice of a narrator played by Heinrich Gretler, one of the greatest Swiss actors of the time, who was Heidi's grandfather in Comencini's film. Fusio tells of the tragic fate of Maria's father, who dies falling into a ravine while he was cutting down a tree, and of a boy, Giulio, who out of fear let the rope holding the woodcutter fall and therefore senses guilt about his death. While the town mourns his death, Giulio flees into the mountains. With its neo-realistic tones, in parallel with the story, the film describes the daily life of the inhabitants and their close bond with the nature that surrounds them. It proves to be one of the few films of the time that seeks a form of truth in its portrayal of a wild and very un-touristy mountainous Ticino.
