Brissago Islands

Two green jewels in the middle of Lake Maggiore: the Brissago Islands are not only Switzerland's only botanical garden located on an island, but also a regional landmark. Over 2000 plant species from the Mediterranean and subtropical regions of all five continents grow here. Creating a unique contrast between subtropical plants and the snow-capped Alpine peaks. On the Isola Grande, the historic villa built on the ruins of a monastery became a centre of intense cultural activity and hosted painters, sculptors, musicians and famous writers, including, by all accounts, James Joyce.
